Malaria
Many areas within the African Continent carry the risk of malaria. This disease should be taken very seriously. Consult your doctor, travel clinic or friendly pharmacist for advice on the most effective prophylactic drug for the African area that you will be visiting.
Use plenty of effective repellent, and wear suitable long sleeved shirts and long pants in the evening. The tents are fitted with mosquito netting. Don't forget to take your drugs - even once you have left the malarial region.
Yellow Fever
Yellow fever is a disease that is spread to humans by infected mosquitoes and easily preventable by immunization. Ensure that you have the correct injections before traveling to a country with Yellow fever. Take note that many African countries require proof that you have been innoculated so don't forget your 'yellow card'!
Food Poisoning
'Be careful what you eat' is common advice to travellers! Diarrhoea affects about 20 - 50% of travellers. Always follow the advice of your Nomad/ Whichway overland guide - avoid the obvious problem areas such as: cooked food held in ambient temperatures, dishes containing raw or uncooked eggs, unpeeled fruits and veg, and shellfish. Ensure that you drink bottled or sterilized water.
Bites, Stings and Nibbles
Scorpions, bees, spiders, snakes, crocodiles, leopards, ticks, mosquitoes and hippos. The list is exhaustive and Africa 's got the lot! An entire website could be dedicated to the prevention and treatment of these different critters. Always follow the instruction and advice of your Nomad/ Whichway guide as there are clear and easy ways of managing all of these situations.
HIV
Sadly millions of people in Africa are infected with the HIV virus. In some African countries it is estimated that 50% of the population are HIV positive. Overland travellers should exercise extreme caution - NEVER participate in unsafe SEX and avoid contact with bodily fluids. The overland guides are well briefed on this important issue - please feel free to discuss this with them.
Dehydration
Africa is HOT and many people feel unwell as they simply have not drunk sufficient water. Ensure that you drink plenty of bottled water and remember that soft drinks and alcohol will dehydrate you and just make you feel worse!
Sunburn
The sun is strongest between 10am - 2pm. Minimize your exposure during this time. Apply plenty of sun protection and wear a hat. Just because the sun is not shining does not mean that you are safe - on an overcast day the suns rays are just as damaging. Be happy with your natural skin colour and don't spend hours trying to change it!
Medical Examination After Travel
If you are feeling at all unwell within a few weeks of your return, then it is advisable to see a doctor to check you out. Many African diseases such as Malaria, Hepatitis and Tick Bite fever can be detected by a series of simple blood tests. Remember always continue your malaria tablets for 4 weeks after you have returned home from a malaria area.
