Namibia Overland Adventure travel - Whichway Overland Adventures

Namibia is a land of wide-open spaces and variable landscapes which present great opportunities for walking, hiking and photography. On an overland adventure, you are sure to visit the spectacular red dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft Park, the wild Skeleton Coastline and the dusty wildlife haven of Etosha National Park - known for its large elephant herds and explosive predator ambushes.

A country rich in history and culture, Namibia is home to a diverse group of people, ranging from 2nd and 3rd generation Germans to the oche-clad semi-nomadic Himba tribes.

If you're after adventure, then Swakopmund on the west coast is the place to visit. Go sand-boarding, sky-diving and quad-biking over the dunes and experience a thrill a minute!

From the southern deserts to the mighty inland waterways of the northern Caprivi area, Namibia is perfect for an overland adventure.

Namibian Climate

The Namibian dry winter season between May and October make this the most pleasant time to visit the country. Exercise caution if you plan to travel to Namib-Naukluft Park and Etosha National Park in the extreme heat between December and March. There are two rainy seasons: the 'little rains' from October to December and the main rainy period from January to April. Low-lying areas in the eastern part of the country are generally much hotter than the Central Plateau and generally receive little rain. View the Namibian temperature guide line.

Namibian Travel Tips

The Namibian celebration of 'Oktoberfest', with its beer swilling and sausage sizzling, is vigorously celebrated throughout the month of October.
When changing money, you can choose between Namibian dollars or South African rand. It's worth noting that the rand and the Namibian dollar have equal value in Namibia, but the Namibian dollar drops to about 70% of the Rand in South Africa. Credit cards are widely accepted in shops, restaurants and hotels.
You are expected to bargain! It is a local way of life, particularly at rural markets.
Traditional Namibian cuisine to look out for is mielie pap, a cornmeal porridge, or mahango millet, also made into a porridge or soup. Both mielie and mahango are typically eaten with fish, goat, lamb or beef stew.
While you travel overland look out for Namibian spiky nara melon, the desert-living Nama people have revered it for tens of thousands of years as some say that it made human existence possible in the Namib.
German influence & heritage also plays a big part in Namibian food - Namibians are big on boerewors, a huge 'farmers sausage'.
