Zimbabwean Travel Tips |
 |
 |
 |
 |
All brands of travelers' cheques in US dollar or UK pound denominations
can be easily exchanged for Zimbabwean dollars at any bank. Always
check carefully with your overland adventure guide before changing
money - the recent Zimbabwean political events have created official
and unofficial exchange rates. |
 |
Perhaps most notable for their quality and beauty
are the symmetrically patterned woven Zimbabwean baskets and stools
carved from a single piece of wood, making excellent gifts. |
 |
Warning - Zimbabwe is currently in a state of turmoil.
The controversial President Robert Mugabe of the Zanu-PF party won
an unprecedented fifth term in March 2002, but the election was plagued
with corruption and the results are highly contested by the opposition
parties and commonwealth officials. Mugabe's tactics include charging
political rivals with treason, arresting journalists and civil rights
activists, and threatening any opposition. |
 |
Travel to Zimbabwe and you will hear much talk about
'Land Reform'. Members of Mugabe's party began occupying some 1500
white-owned farms in 2000. Meanwhile, the country is facing the prospect
of famine due to an ongoing drought and infrastructure problems. |
 |
UK, Australian governments and US are advising their
citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to Zimbabwe. Consequently many
of the tours no longer travel through Zimbabwe until the political
situation has been resolved. When you do travel to Zimbabwe on an
overland adventure safari please always listen carefully to the instructions
of your overland adventure guide.
