Overland Adventure Travel  »  South Africa  »  Knysna

Knysna lazes by a warm shallow lagoon which ebbs and flows with tides that gush through the narrow rocky entrance at the Heads. The road climbing to the top of the eastern Head yields superb views (especially towards sunset) and you can watch yachts surf through the narrow ocean channel to the safety of their moorings. Drop back down to sea level and visit one of the waterside restaurants for the most luscious oysters you have ever eaten, straight from the lagoon hatchery. The cute waterfront complex has more restaurants and shops but the main street is the traditional place to stroll to look at the beautiful bird wood carvings, for which Knysna is so famous.

The area is also famous for its most prominent early 1800’s resident, Englishman, George Rex. The man with an obviously royal name, arrived with much pomp and circumstance and lived in such style and elegance, that rumour spread he was the illegitimate son of King George III. He never confirmed or denied this and the truth remains a mystery. Due to his influential presence, Knysna became a very popular place to settle. Game shooting in the thick woodlands became a favourite sport, but today only some of the indigenous forests still exist and all but one of the Knysna elephants have gone. The one left is a grumpy old matriarch who turned down the attentions of some friends brought to keep her company. She now roams the forests alone while the others have been re-located to a wildlife reserve.

A more picturesque spot you cannot wish for, with beautiful forests and mountains behind, a boating and fishing lagoon to the front and ocean views and swimming beaches close by. Plus one of the most spectacular scenic steam train rides in the world, The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, between George and Knysna. It is not surprising that many people base their Garden Route holiday here.
