Overland Adventure Travel  »  Kenya  »  Kakamega Forest

The Kakamega Forest, one of Kenya’s best kept secrets, is world famous for its diversity of bird and insect life. The rainforest once spanned west and central Africa with its easternmost edge in western Kenya. Human population growth and widescale cultivation has reduced Kakamega to an island of tropical virgin jungle, cut off from the rest of the Guineo-Congolan rain forest.

The Kakamega Forest is a haven for over 300 species of birds, 45 percent of all recorded butterflies in Kenya, seven species of primates and other mammals, as well as snakes, other reptiles and various insects. Here you will find black and white colobus monkeys, redtailed monkey, potto, bushbaby, tree pangolin and leopard. Among the common birds are black-and-white-casqued hornbills, Ross’ turacos, great blue turacos and African grey parrots. The exquisite plant and animal life make it famous among zoologists and botanists around the world. Although the Forest is somewhat protected as a government reserve, the Luhya community who live in the surrounding areas still rely heavily on the forest for basic needs and building materials.

Kakamega town itself is lively with several decent lodgings and a few good places to eat. Rudimentary accommodation is available in the clean and comfortable forest rest house, which is run by the Forest Department.
