The pools that give the Mana Pools National Park its name are fed by the meanderings of the Zambezi river through the floodplain of the Middle Zambezi en-route to Mozambique. The water attracts large herds of winter game although not in as vast numbers as Hwange. However, the park’s attraction lies off the beaten track. Remote from the tarred highways of modern Zimbabwe, visitors can only access the park by 4x4 in the dry season (May to October), but canoe safaris leave from Kariba, year round. Bear in mind, however, a riverside summer in Zimbabwe is a steamy affair.
