Overland Adventure Travel  »  Namibia  »  Sesfontein

In 1896, the government of what was then German South-West Africa built Fort Sesfontein as a control point for cattle disease, arms smuggling and illegal hunting of big animals. The fort was abandoned in 1914 and only ruins and a small army-cemetery bear witness to the former German presence in Sesfontein. The valley basin of Sesfontein (six fountains) is full of lush green gardens, wihch give the landscape its special oasis character. Sesfontein is the gateway to Kaokoveld, an area of some 50 000km between the Hoanib and Cunene, the frontier river to Angola. Here there are untouched landscapes, such as sandy desert and bizarre rock forms. Elephants, giraffes, zebras, oryx antelopes and ostriches can be discovered in their natural habitat beyond the reaches of civilization.
