Most of Mbarara was destroyed during the civil war and it has only been rebuilt partly. There are several hotels and restaurants in town. Mbarara is 240 km southwest of Kampala and has frequent matatu connections with the capital.
Tourist attractions: Lake Mburo National Park the home of the Zebra, the Abagabe burial site at Nkokonjeru, the ancient spears and drums and Ankole long horned cattle
