The Kruger National Park is renowned as one of the best safari destinations in the world. It is a huge park, stretching almost 350km along the country's eastern border with Mozambique. Most of the 147 mammal species are scattered throughout the park, though there are definite differences between the northern and southern sections.
The northern part of the park is much less visited than the more accessible south and is therefore much wilder and more remote. It is drier and hotter than the south, although the general climate remains the same - subtropical with hot, rainy summers from October to March and dry, cooler winters.
North of the Olifants river, the predominant vegetation tends to be mopani shrubland. This is the kind of terrain preferred by elephants and tsessebi, eland, roan and sable antelopes also like to hang out here. Around Punda Maria and Pafuri in the far north, you will see interesting vegetation like baobabs, due to the higher rainfall in the area. Between the Luvuvhu and Limpopo rivers there is even a tropical riverine forest. Keep a lookout for crocodiles and hippos.
